Expat tax filing

US expat tax return filing: your 1040, from abroad.

If you're a US citizen or green-card holder, you file a 1040 wherever you live. We prepare yours with the foreign earned income exclusion (Form 2555) or the foreign tax credit (Form 1116), whichever leaves you owing less, plus the state return if there is one. You pay what you owe and not a dollar more.

§ What's included

The forms that actually apply to you.

Form 2555 · FEIE

Takes your foreign wages off the US return, up to the annual limit. You qualify through the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test (330 full days abroad in 12 months), and we check which one you actually meet.

Form 1116 · FTC

A dollar-for-dollar credit for income tax you paid abroad. We convert your foreign figures to dollars, put the income in the right category and keep track of any unused credit, which carries forward ten years.

State tax returns

Some states, California and Virginia among them, don't let go easily when you leave. If yours still has a claim, we file the return. If it shouldn't, we help you show you've really left.

§ How it works

How a return goes, start to finish.

№ 01

Tell us about your year

A short questionnaire: where you lived, what you earned, which accounts you hold abroad, and whether you’ve filed with the IRS before.

№ 02

Send us your documents

W-2s and 1099s, foreign payslips or your local tax return, and year-end bank and brokerage statements. They go in the portal, not in email.

№ 03

We prepare it, then someone checks it

An enrolled agent prepares your 1040 and works out the exclusion against the credit. A second person reviews it before you see it.

№ 04

You sign, we e-file

Read it over and ask about anything that looks odd. Once you e-sign, we file the federal return and any state returns.
